My Third Volunteer Project: Working with The United Way

When I searched for a new volunteer project, I wanted something big, a known brand, if at all possible. Then I found the United Way, and I jumped on that project, and I applied. My heart was pounding because I knew this would help me with my future.

When I received the call, I was super happy and excited to work on this project. I had to do some minor updates to the website, some were easy, and some were pretty difficult.

The very first thing I did was update their donate page. They’re using JotForm, never worked with it before, never even heard of it, but once I got in and started playing around with the settings, I found out you can program your donation form with BASIC language! Boy, did I jump up and down when I found out about that. I was going back to my roots with IF statements, and I haven’t played with IF statements in a while, I was excited.

After playing around with the form, I was able to get it exactly how I wanted it and they were pleased with it, I was as well.

The next step was to update a few of their websites where you download documents, info, pledge forms, etc. I wanted it to make it look nice, so when you download a document, the “DOWNLOAD” button will change to “DOWNLOADED.” So, with WordPress and Elementor, you’re able to insert an HTML block, and all you have to do is:

  • For your Button, under Button ID, add something easy to remember (Replace “BUTTON ID” with yours)
  • Add the HTML block right beneath the Button
  • Add the following HTML code:
<script>
document.querySelector("#BUTTON ID").addEventListener("click", function(){
  document.querySelector("#BUTTON ID  .elementor-button-text").innerHTML = "DOWNLOADED";
  document.querySelector("#my-title").style.display = "block";
  //document.querySelector("#BUTTON ID").style.display = "none";
});
 document.querySelector("#my-title").style.display = "none";
</script>

Whenever someone downloads a document, they will get a new button, as a reminder that they downloaded that particular document already.

After that, they asked me to look through the website to make sure everything was uniform with fonts, colors, headers, pictures, etc. Then they requested for me to add a partner to their Partner Agency page. I uploaded the information and made sure that a particular page was even with pictures, buttons, links, and descriptions. I did find a couple of buttons that, when you hover over them, they did not change color; I updated that, as well.

I had a lot of fun with this project, and they were super nice to me, great communication, and I really hope we can work together again in the future.
